Crew members in Reykjavík usually need one of three things: a ride from the ship into the city during a short break, a transfer to Keflavík Airport when signing on or off, or a vehicle for a whole group. Each one is easy once you know where the ship docks, how much time you have and how many bags are coming along. This guide covers all three, and it is written for crew, crew agents, port agents and the people who book travel for them.
TL;DR
- Most large ships dock at Skarfabakki in Sundahöfn, about 3 km east of the city centre, so you need a vehicle or a long walk to reach town.
- Crew changes are the part that cannot go wrong: book the airport transfer in advance, with flight tracking, so a delay does not leave anyone waiting.
- For groups and heavy luggage, a private vehicle with fixed pricing is simpler than hoping for several taxis at the pier.
- We run private transfers across Iceland, from 45 USD per traveler for Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík, and vehicles for up to 49 passengers.
- Cancel up to 24 hours before pickup for a full refund.

Who needs crew transport in Reykjavík, and when
A cruise ship is a workplace with a schedule that does not bend. That shapes every transport decision for crew.
Short shore leave. A few hours off, usually between duties. You want to reach the city, see something, and be back before the all-aboard time.
Sign-on and sign-off. Crew joining or leaving the ship travel with full luggage, often to or from an international flight at Keflavík. This is where a missed connection costs the most.
Group movements. A department leaving together, a team going to a hotel before a flight, or a group of officers taking a day out. Several people, many bags, one deadline.
Agents and managers. Crew agents, hotel desks and travel coordinators who arrange all of the above for people they will never meet in person.
The needs differ, so the sections below take them in turn.

Where the ship docks and why it matters
Before choosing a vehicle, know your berth. Reykjavík has more than one cruise berth. The main modern pier is Skarfabakki in the Sundahöfn harbor area, which handles almost all medium and large calls and sits about 3 km east of the centre. Smaller or special calls may use the Old Harbour, which is much closer to the sights. Our own guide explains where your cruise ship docks in Reykjavík, and it is worth reading once you know your ship's call.
At Skarfabakki, the walk into town along the coastal road takes roughly 40 minutes, according to the same port guide. That is fine on a calm day with nothing to carry. It is not a plan for someone with a duffel bag and a flight to catch.
| Berth | Distance to city centre | What it means for crew |
|---|---|---|
| Skarfabakki, Sundahöfn | About 3 km east | Needs a shuttle, bus, taxi or private vehicle |
| Old Harbour | A short walk from central sights | Walkable for shore leave, but luggage still needs a vehicle |
Ask your port agent or the ship's shore-excursion desk which berth the call uses and write it into the booking. A driver who knows the exact pier saves ten minutes of searching on both sides.
Port to city centre: the options
There are four realistic ways to get from the pier to town, and each has a trade-off.
Ship or cruise-line shuttle
Many calls have a shuttle from the pier to the city centre. The ride is short, roughly 10 to 15 minutes to the centre. It is usually the cheapest option for passengers, but crew access varies by ship and by shift, and the shuttle runs to its own timetable. Check with your supervisor.
Public bus
The same port guide notes that a city bus serves the port. It works for one person traveling light with time to spare. It is a poor choice for groups carrying luggage, or for anyone with a tight departure.
Taxi
Taxis exist, but travelers on public forums regularly report that there are few available at the pier when several ships are in at once, and that people were told to go to a central station to find one. That is anecdotal, but it matches what we hear: when three or four ships arrive on the same morning, a taxi at the gangway is not something to rely on. A taxi also has a fixed number of seats. A group of four with four large suitcases is a common problem, and the usual answer is two cars or a larger vehicle booked ahead.
Prebooked private transfer
A private vehicle that is waiting at the pier at the time you agreed. Pricing is fixed in advance, there is no queue and the vehicle is sized for your group and bags. For crew with a deadline, this is the lowest-risk option.
Port to Keflavík Airport: the crew-change run
The airport is the trip that matters most. Keflavík is about 45 minutes by road from the Reykjavík harbor area under normal conditions, and most international departures are early morning or midday. The right approach is to work backwards from the flight.
A simple way to plan it:
- Take the flight departure time.
- Subtract the time you need at the airport. Allow the check-in and bag-drop window your airline publishes, plus a buffer if you travel with several people.
- Subtract the drive of around 45 minutes.
- Subtract time to disembark, clear any ship formalities and get your bags to the pier.
- That is the latest pickup time. Choose something earlier.
Crew sign-off often depends on the ship's own clearance process, which can run late. Tell your driver the realistic window, not the optimistic one. If you book with us, flight tracking follows the flight, so the driver for an arriving crew member adjusts to a delay without you making a call.
For passengers flying with Icelandair from Keflavík, there is also a luggage option: BagBee offers airline check-in and luggage transfer from Reykjavík harbor. That is a separate service for people who want their bags handled before the transfer, and it is worth knowing about if your crew members fly that airline.
We have written more about this route in two guides: Reykjavík cruise port to the airport and the reverse, getting from Keflavík Airport to the Reykjavík cruise port.
Joining the ship: airport to pier
Crew arriving to sign on face the opposite problem. They land after a long journey, they carry everything they own for a contract, and they have to find the right pier. A driver meeting them in arrivals with a name sign removes most of that. Our Keflavík to Reykjavík harbor guide covers what to expect on arrival.
Groups, luggage and vehicle size
Group transport is where private transfers stand out. Here is what to count before you book.
- People. Count everyone, including officers and trainees traveling together.
- Large bags. One large suitcase per person is standard. Crew on a contract change often have two bags and a backpack.
- Seats per vehicle. A sedan or electric car suits one to three travelers with moderate luggage. A van suits a larger group. For bigger groups, coaches are available.
- Pickup points. If the group splits between the pier and a hotel, say so, so the driver can plan the route.
Our fleet includes Mercedes and Tesla vehicles, plus Toyota, and we can arrange transport for groups of up to 49 passengers. If you are moving more than a handful of people, request a quote with your pickup and drop-off, the number of passengers and the bags. A sales agent replies within 24 hours. Our guide to luggage rules on transfers for Irish travelers also covers what to do with bags when you have hours to fill before a flight.
Timing around the all-aboard deadline
Crew on shore leave work to a hard deadline. These habits keep you on the right side of it.
- Plan the return first. Pick the time you must be at the gangway and subtract the ride and a buffer. Treat that as the end of your day.
- Book the return as well as the outward trip. An outward ride without a return is how people end up in a line for a taxi at the city center late in the afternoon.
- Agree a meeting point. In the city, a landmark with a clear address is better than a general area.
- Keep a phone number. You want one number that reaches a person at any hour. Our support is available 24/7.
- Allow for weather. Iceland changes quickly. Wind and rain can slow a loading process and a drive.
The same logic applies to managers. If you coordinate a rotation of fifty crew over a week, one confirmation per vehicle with times, names and a mobile number saves you chasing the details later. If you are planning a larger set of arrivals and pickups at a terminal, a resource such as this planner's guide to VIP yacht transfers shows how the same coordination steps apply at the dock.
Paying for transport
With a prebooked transfer, you agree the price when you book, so there is nothing to negotiate at the pier. Ours is fixed, with no hidden fees, and booking confirmation is instant. For pay-on-the-day services such as taxis and buses, check which payment methods each accepts before you go ashore, and do not assume that foreign cash will be taken. A card is the safe choice in Iceland, and your ship's finance desk can usually tell you what to carry.
What a private transfer costs
Here are the published starting prices for our most common routes. Rates are per traveler for transfers and per group for day tours.
| Service | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Keflavík Airport (KEF) private transfer to or from Reykjavík, any group size | from 45 USD per traveler |
| Blue Lagoon private transfer from Reykjavík or Keflavík Airport | from 36 USD per traveler |
| Sky Lagoon private transfer from Reykjavík or Keflavík Airport | from 36 USD per traveler |
| Private Golden Circle Classic Tour with Kerið Crater | from 1550 USD per group |
| Private South Coast Tour with Vík and the black sand beach | from 1800 USD per group |
| Private Snæfellsnes Peninsula Tour from Reykjavík | from 1950 USD per group |
| Private Northern Lights Evening Tour | from 950 USD per group |
The final price for a specific pickup depends on the route and group. For anything outside the standard routes, such as a pickup at the cruise pier, request a quote.
Our perspective: what we see on port days
We work with arrivals and departures in Iceland every day, and the pattern is consistent. Problems seldom come from distance. They come from assumptions: that a taxi will be there, that the flight will land on time, that the whole group fits in one car, or that someone else booked the return.

So we build the service around removing those assumptions. The price is fixed when you book. We track the flight, so a late landing does not leave a driver at the wrong time or a passenger waiting. Drivers are licensed and speak English. Support answers at any hour, which matters when a ship's schedule changes at night. And if plans change, you can cancel up to 24 hours before pickup for a full refund.
For crew, our advice is simple. Decide the hard deadline first, whether that is a flight or the gangway, and book backwards from it. Book both directions. Tell us the berth. Give us the real number of people and bags. Everything else we can handle.

Book crew and group transfers with us
If you arrange transport for yourself, a department or a whole rotation, we can take it from here. Start with our private transfers page for the airport and lagoon routes, or the Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík private transfer if the airport run is what you need. For pickups at the cruise pier or anywhere else in Iceland, send your pickup and drop-off through the quote form and a sales agent will get back to you within 24 hours. Travel agencies and crew agents can also work with us on a B2B basis.

For a longer stay, we also run private day tours such as the Golden Circle, for crew groups with a full day off.
Frequently asked questions
Can crew members use the same transfers as passengers?
Yes, a private transfer is open to anyone who books it. You need the pickup point, the time and the number of people. For groups, send a quote request with the details so we can match the vehicle to the bags.
How far in advance should I book a crew-change transfer?
As soon as the flight and the ship's schedule are confirmed. Booking is instant and confirmed on the spot, and you can cancel up to 24 hours before pickup for a full refund, so booking early carries little risk.
What happens if the flight is delayed?
We track flights in real time and adjust the pickup automatically. You do not need to call, though our 24/7 support is there if you want to check anything.
Is there a vehicle big enough for a whole department?
Our fleet covers groups of up to 49 passengers. Tell us the number of people and the luggage, and we will propose the right vehicle in our quote.
How long is the drive from the cruise port to Keflavík Airport?
Allow around 45 minutes in normal conditions, then add time for disembarking, bags and check-in. Weather and traffic can add to this, so build in a buffer.
